The Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education announced Tuesday evening that Sherley O’Brien, the current Chief of Staff at LCPS, has been selected to serve as interim superintendent. O’Brien’s term begins April 8 and ends Aug. 15 – unless the board names a permanent replacement before then.
O’Brien takes over following the announcement that Superintendent Ralph Ramos was retiring, effective April 7.
At the meeting, the board approved preliminary steps to hire a permanent superintendent. At the work session April 11, the board will consider options for a superintendent search consultant and will name volunteers for the superintendent search committee.
O’Brien holds a master's degree in educational administration from New Mexico State University. She earned her bachelor’s in elementary education at the University of Arizona and taught at the elementary level for five years. She was an assistant principal for three years before leaving education to work in the private sector as a chief operations officer. In 2017, O’Brien returned to LCPS and spent five years in Human Resources, first as a coordinator, then rose through the ranks to the position of Director. O'Brien was offered a pro-rated salary of $172,500 per year.
